Governor

The governor is Minnesota's chief executive, who proposes the state budget, signs or vetoes legislation, and appoints the heads of state agencies.

4-year term. Open seat: no incumbent is running. Gov. Tim Walz (DFL) launched a bid for a third term but withdrew in January 2026. Governor and lieutenant governor run together on a joint ticket. In the Aug. 11, 2026 primaries, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar won the DFL nomination, and House Speaker Lisa Demuth won the Republican nomination over Mike Lindell and Kendall Qualls. The Green Party ticket of Steven Young and Jane Kirby also appears on the ballot.

    Running mate: Ryan Wilson (Lieutenant Governor)

    Demuth has represented a central Minnesota House district since 2019, led House Republicans as minority leader from 2023 to 2025, and became speaker in 2025 under a power-sharing agreement. Before the Legislature she served on the Rocori school board. Her running mate is attorney Ryan Wilson, and her campaign focuses on fraud prevention, tax cuts, education results and public safety.

    Running mate: Ben Schierer (Lieutenant Governor)

    Klobuchar has represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate since 2007 and was previously Hennepin County attorney. She entered the governor's race in January 2026 after Gov. Tim Walz withdrew, and her running mate is former Fergus Falls Mayor Ben Schierer. Her campaign focuses on lowering health care and housing costs, preventing fraud in state programs, and the rural economy.

    Running mate: Jane Kirby (Lieutenant Governor)

    Young is a former U.S. Marine, former attorney and former neighborhood grocery store owner who has served on the Minneapolis Food Council. He is the Green Party of Minnesota's endorsed candidate for governor, with midwife Jane Kirby as his running mate. His campaign centers on opposition to federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, making Minnesota a sanctuary state, banning hyperscale data centers, and climate jobs.
