One of Kentucky's two U.S. senators, who vote on federal legislation, confirm presidential nominees and ratify treaties.
6-year term. Open seat: no incumbent is running. Regular election for the full term beginning January 2027. Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell, in office since 1985, announced on February 20, 2025 that he would not seek reelection. In the May 19, 2026 primaries, Andy Barr won the Republican nomination with 60.5% of the vote and Charles Booker won the Democratic nomination with about 47%. Christopher Campbell filed with the Secretary of State as the Kentucky Party candidate. Thomas Michael Murphy is listed in the Secretary of State's 2026 general election filings as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate.

Andy Barr

Ernie Fletcher's administration. He won the May 2026 Republican primary for the open seat. His campaign centers on tax cuts, border security, Kentucky energy production, support for law enforcement and countering China.
Charles Booker
Former State Representative (43rd District, Louisville); former Director, Kentucky Governor's Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and Community InvolvementCharles Booker is a Democrat and attorney from West Louisville who served in the Kentucky House from 2019 to 2021 and was the party's 2022 U.S. Senate nominee. He won the May 2026 Democratic primary for the open seat. His campaign centers on health care costs, poverty, energy bills, union jobs and limits on war powers, and he describes it as uniting Kentuckians "from the hood to the holler."
Christopher Campbell
Health care worker and union memberChristopher Campbell is the Kentucky Party candidate for U.S. Senate, a lifelong Kentuckian who grew up in Marion County and has worked in health care. He says he served in the Kentucky National Guard and is a dues-paying union member. His platform includes Medicare for All, labor rights, term limits, cuts to military spending and election changes such as ranked-choice voting.
