Governor

The governor is Maine's chief executive, who proposes the state budget, signs or vetoes legislation, and appoints the heads of state agencies.

4-year term. Open seat: no incumbent is running. Open seat: Gov. Janet Mills (D) is term-limited. Maine has no lieutenant governor, so candidates run alone. Ranked-choice voting applies only to federal offices in Maine's general election, so the governor's race is decided by plurality. Declared write-in candidates (Aug. 25, 2026 list): John Glowa (independent/unenrolled) and Randy Wilcox (Republican).

  • Rick Bennett

    Bennett is a state senator from Oxford, a former Maine Senate president and former chair of the Maine Republican Party who left the party in 2025 to run for governor as an independent. He runs a corporate governance advisory firm. His campaign centers on housing and energy costs, property tax relief, health care costs and government accountability, and on governing outside the two-party system.

    Republican

    Charles (Robert B. Charles) is a Republican attorney from Leeds who grew up in Wayne, served as a Navy intelligence officer, and was assistant secretary of state for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs from 2003 to 2005. He won the June 2026 Republican primary after ranked-choice tabulation. His campaign centers on lower taxes and energy costs, fighting drug trafficking and crime, and government accountability.

    Former Director, Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future; former Speaker of the Maine House
    Democratic

    Pingree is a Democrat from North Haven who served in the Maine House from 2002 to 2010, including two years as Speaker, and later led Gov. Janet Mills's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. She won the June 2026 Democratic primary after ranked-choice tabulation. Her campaign centers on housing, affordability, health care costs, clean energy and education.

Proposes raising the homestead exemption in phases from $25,000 to $100,000, with the state reimbursing towns for 100% of lost revenue; supports lowering and eventually eliminating the state income tax.

Proposes doubling the homestead exemption, expanding the Property Tax Fairness Credit, and taxing second homes owned by non-Maine residents at higher rates.
